It was inspired by the words of U.S. Representative Henry Hyde, who used the expression "friends of freedom" in a speech. The people of the United States, he said "believe that human rights are universal" and "we will work with the friends of freedom to advance the prospects of a world in which those universal human rights are acknowledged in life and protected in law.
