This piece is purely diatonic until the very last note of the very last chord at the end (Dmin13), which pyramids using the four-note motive of the verse. The four measure theme of the first half of each verse is based on a four-note motive (D-F-G-A) and then I used a composition technique called truncation to develop the theme. I don’t know how original it is but I am also proud of the leading chord I created without using an non-diatonic accidentals (Amin7b9sus4) that still created a natural tension that released into the tonic chord (Dmin9).
Lyrics wise, I deliberately left out common love song words like love, lonely, heart, etc. and tried to subtly convey that the singer loves their partner and is lonely when they are gone through a combination of the lyrics and the melancholy mood of the music.
The arrangement is rather bland but I think the piece has promise in the right hands.
