Rossini wrote his final opera "Guillaume Tell" in 1829 for the Thtre Italien. The opera recounts the tale of the Swiss hero, William Tell, who was arrested and told he would be set free if he could shoot an apple off his sons head. Not only was the full opera his longest (taking 6 hours to perform) the overture was Rossini’s longest and most elaborate. This arrangement starts with the "Calm" after the storm! The initial flute melody was based on the Swiss "ranz des vaches" a tune played by the cowherds calling their cattle on Alpine horns. While the Finale contains the familiar "Lone Ranger" theme or "galop" which is supposed to signify the approaching Swiss army galloping in on horseback!
